Hermès Receipt: Birkin, Kelly, and the Documentation of the World's Most Coveted Bags
The Hermès Allocation System
You cannot simply walk into a Hermès boutique and buy a Birkin or Kelly. Access to these bags requires an established buying history with the boutique — a relationship built through purchasing scarves, belts, home items, and other products over time. When a Hermès SA finally offers you a Birkin or Kelly (the offer process is called an "invitation"), the purchase confirmation that follows is extraordinarily significant: it documents one of the rarest retail transactions in the luxury market.
What a Hermès Receipt Looks Like
Hermès purchase documentation is as restrained and refined as the products themselves. The Hermès wordmark in orange and serif on white. Your order reference, date, and the product details: the full bag name (e.g. "Birkin 30 — Togo Leather — Gold Hardware — Bleu de France"), the leather type (Togo, Epsom, Clemence, Swift), hardware finish, and price. VAT is broken out. For items purchased in-store in France, the receipt is printed and presented in an orange envelope. Online purchases generate an email confirmation.
Birkin Receipts and Investment Value
Hermès Birkins appreciate in value — a standard 30cm Birkin in Togo with gold hardware purchased at retail for £10,000–£12,000 typically resells for £15,000–£25,000+ at auction, depending on colour and leather. This makes the receipt the most financially significant document in many people's wardrobes. Auction houses (Christie's, Sotheby's) and specialist resellers (Privé Porter, Heritage Auctions) require and prominently feature original purchase receipts in their listings.
