eBay Receipt: Order Confirmation for the World's Biggest Marketplace

eBay: Three Ways to Buy, Three Different Receipts

eBay operates more purchase formats than any other marketplace. Auction wins produce one confirmation format. Buy It Now purchases produce another. And eBay Authenticity Guaranteed — the platform's sneaker and luxury authentication service — produces a third, which includes an authentication certificate alongside the standard order confirmation. Knowing which format applies to your purchase determines how the receipt should look.

What an eBay Order Confirmation Contains

Standard eBay order confirmations open with the eBay logo in the brand's red. Your order number (a 12-digit string), purchase date, and item title appear prominently. For auction wins, the confirmation shows the winning bid price. For Buy It Now, it shows the listed price. Seller name, item condition (New, Used, Refurbished), and postage cost appear below the item details. For Authenticity Guaranteed items — typically sneakers, handbags, or watches — an additional authentication reference number appears, linking to the authentication report.

eBay for Business: VAT Invoices and Receipts

eBay offers VAT invoices for UK and EU business buyers who have registered their VAT number with their account. These appear in the seller's invoice rather than the eBay platform confirmation. If you buy from a VAT-registered seller, they're obligated to provide a VAT invoice on request. If the seller is not VAT-registered (common for private sellers), no VAT invoice exists. The eBay order confirmation is the closest available documentation in that case.
